Padraig Larkin
Basketmaker, Willow Craft Practitioner, And Educator
Padraig is a basketmaker and rural craft practitioner with over 20 years of experience working with willow and hazel. Originally from Clonfert, Co. Galway and now based in Cloghan, Co. Offaly, he learned basketry from Joe Hogan and developed his own style through traditional methods, courses, books, and sustained hands-on practice. His work includes functional basketry, willow sculpture, willow art, and oaten straw pieces. In 2012, he received an award in the RDS National Crafts Competition for an infant Moses basket made using the Tate and Plait method.
Together with Barry, he has been involved in The Gathering Of Stones, a large-scale dry stone wall project in Lough Boora Discovery Park. He has completed extensive sculptural live willow structure work in Lough Boora Discovery Park and continues to maintain sculpture and artwork there and at other client sites around the country. Padraig is a member of the Irish Basketmakers Association and the Dry Stone Walling Society of Ireland, and holds train-the-trainer certification.
Barry Larkin
Dry Stone Waller, Hedgelayer, Weaver, And Educator
Barry is an experienced dry stone waller and hedgelayer, and a member of the Dry Stone Walling Society of Ireland and Hedgerows Ireland (formerly the Hedge Laying Association of Ireland). He learned live willow structure weaving and basketry from his father, Padraig, and has completed a range of garden landscaping projects with a strong focus on boundary restoration, including wall repair, hedgelaying, and mature hedgerow rejuvenation.
Barry maintains a small hazel coppice and is deeply committed to biodiversity and habitat protection, particularly the role of hedgerows as wildlife corridors. Originally from Co. Offaly and now based in Co. Clare with his family, he is focused on preserving traditional craft techniques, learning from fellow craftspeople, and passing practical skills on to others.
